Know which doors matter
List the public entrance, staff entrance, delivery door, shutters, internal restricted areas and any fire doors. Record which locks each key operates and who currently holds copies. Keep the record secure; it should not reveal access details to people who do not need them.
A lost key, staff departure, contractor access or change of tenancy may prompt a review. The appropriate response depends on the risk, lock system and ownership or lease arrangements. Avoid making a blanket change before checking who is authorised and what doors are part of a building-wide system.
Keep security compatible with safe escape
Access control should not obstruct escape or compromise fire doors. Identify the responsible person for the premises and check procedures before changing locks, closers, access-control equipment or door hardware. Government guidance for offices and shops says final exits should be quickly and easily openable without a key or code; Merseyside Fire & Rescue also advises keeping escape routes clear and emergency exits accessible. Follow the premises’ own fire risk assessment for specific arrangements.
For a workplace, consult the applicable fire risk assessment, building arrangements and competent safety advice. A locksmith article cannot determine a business's statutory duties or certify that its premises complies.
Make future repairs easier to manage
Keep non-sensitive product details, supplier contact information and a record of approved key holders. When requesting repair, identify the door, symptom, current security state and person authorising the work. Ask what the quote covers and whether replacement changes which keys operate other doors.
RapidLock lists commercial locksmith services, including enquiries about commercial door locks. Confirm the specific lock type and current availability directly. The help centre provides general consumer answers, while urgent enquiries can start at the emergency page.
